Bloc Party - English Indie Rock
May 23, 2008 – 10:27 amEnglish Indie rock band Bloc Party hit the scene in 1998. The band is composed of Kele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong. Bloc Party’s own style of guitar rock compares to such bands as The Cure, Joy Division, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pixies. The band has released two studio albums and fourteen singles which have attributed to their popularity.
Their first studio album, Silent Alarm, was released in 2005, receiving widespread acclaim. Silent Alarm reached #3 in the UK Albums Chart and was voted the 2005 NME Album of the Year. Two years later, Bloc Party released A Weekend in the City. The album entered the UK Album Chart at #2 and in the US at #12.
Bloc Party’s single “Banquet”, video below, reached #13 in NME’s Top 50 singles of 2005. “Banquet” is Bloc Party’s signature song - the best thing in the band’s early career. Kele’s vocals accompanied with a jumpy bass and drums provides a mixture of post-punk, British pop that’s sure to have you dancing to the beat!
